Could a traineeship be right for you?

Traineeships: Could a traineeship be right for you?

Definition:traineeship is an education and training programme which incorporates work experience, preparing young people for their future careers by helping them to become 'work ready'. ... Employers are not required to pay trainees for the work placement and traineeships are exempt from the Minimum Wage.

Definition: An apprenticeship is a system of training a new generation of practitioners of a trade or profession with on-the-job training and often some accompanying study (classroom work and reading). Apprenticeships can also enable practitioners to gain a license to practice in a regulated profession.

Differences: The difference between a traineeship and an apprenticeship is that a traineeship can be either a full-time or part-time employment based training arrangement, usually for around 12 months (apprenticeships usually last for three to four years) and is generally in a non-trade related area

Do you get paid for a traineeship?

Most trainees get their pay and conditions related to their training from Schedule E in the Miscellaneous Award 2010. They get their other entitlements (such as penalty rates, overtime and allowances) from the industry or occupation award that covers them.

Could a traineeship be right for you?

Could a traineeship be right for you? If you are currently considering your career options and plans for the future, then a traineeship might be right for you.

A traineeship is an education and training programme which could be found in either the private sector or public sector, which incorporates work experience and preparing young people like you for their future careers, by helping them to become 'work ready'

Although employers are not required to pay trainees for the work placement, and traineeships are exempt from the minimum wage, many traineeships are paid positions or they cover travel costs and other expenses.

The skills and experienced gained as a trainee will be valuable additions to your CV and will make you stand out to employers and recruiters once you are decided on your chosen career path.

A traineeship could last from 6 weeks up to 6 months, so there will be a position to suit you. Aimed at 16 to 24 year olds, a traineeship is the perfect way to get you ready for an apprenticeship position, or a permanent job.

Are you a Parent helping your Teenager to find work?

Are you a Parent helping your Teenager to find work? Then we can help you with the process.

We are more than aware that not all young people aged 16 and over want to continue learning and go on to higher and further education. For them a traineeship, an apprenticeship, or a job might be the best option. However, the majority of the information out there is geared heavily towards teenagers continuing in education for as long as possible.

We wish that more employers would consider introducing apprenticeship schemes. There is still some Government assistance for those firms willing to offer places. Our own data and research shows that there are thousands of teenagers aged 16-17 who would prefer to work as an apprentice, if the places were out there.

If your teenager is under 16 then they will only be able to seek out part-time work, but the skills and experience they gain from doing a part time job will prepare them for any future opportunities, as well as giving them some money of their own to spend.

Older teenagers and school leavers are generally more focused on their options and whether or not further education is right for them. An 18 year old with real work experience on their CV will stand out to employers as being work-ready.

We encourage all parents to visit the Parents & Guardians section of our website and pick up some useful tips and advice.

Sweet Success for Scottish Teenager

A schoolboy who was told he was too young to get an after-school job has now set up his own business selling sweets.

Alfie Mutch, 12, is desperate to be rich and have enough cash to splash on whatever he wants.

He found it impossible to find work after lessons so took matters into his own hands and began selling customised cones of treats door-to-door.

When that took off he moved online and his business “Alfie's Confectionery” is a smash hit.

But the schoolboy has to deal with unique problems that are not an issue for other entrepreneurs, including his little sister Layla, eating his stock.

His mum Jade said: “Alfie said to me ‘how can I get a job’?

“It’s not like when I was young and you could do loads of things like babysitting or dog walking to make extra cash.

“You’ve got to be about 16 to do most jobs. He knows that sweeties sell so this was the perfect idea.”

“We’re really proud of him and it’s great that he’s realising the value of money and hard work at a young age.”

Alfie, from Newmachar, Aberdeenshire, did a project at school where he was given a fiver and had to make the money grow.

He opted for sweeties and discovered they’re a big seller so went back to them when he launched his own business.

Mental health nurse Jade and offshore worker dad Jason are stunned by his business acumen.

Jade said: “He just wants to make lots of money.”

“He’s really money-orientated and is obsessed with being rich one day. I’ve no idea where it comes from.”

Alfie does most of the work himself, although he has to get his mum to drive him to buy supplies.

“He’s always coming up with new ideas on how to make money and even goes to car boot sales to sell stuff he no longer needs.”

But it’s all so he can splash the cash, and loves buying things like merchandise from his favourite TV series, Netflix hit Stranger Things.
